The main difference between routed and gated is that routed only supports
RIP whereas gated supports additional routing protocols such as OSPF. The
one you chose depends on what routing protocols you're using on your
network.
In fact you don't need to use either if you opt for static routing (static
routing tables can be more secure, but requires more setting up vs. gated
or routed - just switch them on).
Look up the man pages for gated and routed on your UNIX box these are very
comprehensive.

Hello, just a few questions concerning routed and gated running on a NV
box:
Is there a problem if routed is running on the NV station, even though I
haven't seen any problems with it.
Is it better to run gated (since it supports snmp and routed doesn't.)on
the NV station.
And if gated is running on a NV station, is there a problem if all the
equipment NV is monitoring run's routed.
