When the backup is started, a file should appear in /tmp (within a few minutes 
of the backup started) with a name along the lines .archive.list.xxxxx . Take a 
copy of this and compare it to the list of files created while the backup is 
running. This will give you a better idea of what is/isn't backed up. As far as 
I know, the backup doesn't stop if it can't find  a file to back-up.

My main concern was with the backup stopping once this error occured. 
What you're saying means that the last thing mksysb backs up is the /tmp 
directory, which is generally not crucial for a restore. Can you 
confirm, please ?
