Ken -
I no longer have a V4 system to play with. The procedure outlined works
for me just peachy on Version 5.1. I did see a posting here on this
subject (from Don Davis I thought) which said that you had to edit the
$HOME/NvEnvironment/Workspaces file and change Initial Normal to Initial
Iconic to get it to startup iconized, so perhaps that is true at your level
as well. I didn't have time to investigate. To get the position to change
you could edit the Dimensions line in that file as well (those are standard
Motif coordinates). But I could always get that to work just by exiting
nvevents with the window in the position I wanted.
But none of this will work unless you have a Workspaces file created by
Save Environment at least once, and have modified the Nvevents apps-default
file to say LoadEnvOnInit : True ( and make sure there are no
trailing spaces on the end).
I think you and the support guy had a mis-communication. What was changed
in Nvevents was not the addition of some geometry coordinates but making
the nvevents process respect the width and height parameters in that file.
So U451880 allowed you to say how big but not where to start. And that's
all you get there. To do anything more you have to bring it up,
re-position the window, iconize it, and so on. But it is the Load
EnvOnInit which causes those changes, saved in the Workspaces file to be
read and used. Guess it is more complicated than it needs to be.
Hope this helps

Hi James!!
I performed the process you described below with no success. This has been
a NV pet peeve with me for some time (since v3). I am running NV v4.1.2,
PTF U453385. I was told by an IBM support that PTF U451880 would support
the use of X/Y coordinate settings. I checked the
/usr/OV/app-defaults/Nvevents for the geometry settings, but was unable to
find anything that correlated to the positioning of the nvevents window.
Is the procedure you described below supported under 4.1.2 with the PTF
level I have loaded? Are there other options?
btw... personal thanks from me for all the times you have answered
countless questions that in turn help all of us!

Subject: Re: NVevents, SNMP config questions
This is not as simple as it might appear.
You have edit the Nvevents app-defaults file, either the one in
/usr/OV/app-defaults or a copy in the home directory of the user which
stats the GUI. You have to edit the nvevents.LoadEnvOn.Init value to
"True". Then when you start the GUI and the window pops up, first move it
to where you want it, then pull down the Options button and select "Save
Environment", and then iconize the window. Then close the NetView GUI
down. In the home directory of the user who started the GUI an
Nvenvironment directory will be created. In that directory will be a file
called "Workspaces" which will record the position and status of the events
window. When you start up again, this file will be read and restore the
window to it's iconized state.
Good luck

Subject: NVevents, SNMP config questions
Netview 5.1 on AIX: Does someone out there know a setting (somewhere in
app-defaults, I presume) to have the Nvevents window started minimized? I
found the settings for the Navigation window and the tool bar, but not
Events. Every time the GUI is restarted, the events window pops up on top
of the map, and this is an operations center where the
system/keyboard/mouse
are far removed from the console.
Thanks,
