Ron, here's one from Don Davis, which I keep for reference.
Maybe doing the math will help you figure it out:
==========================================================
Here's the new scoop for v5.1:
Given: Timeout=2, Retry=5
Initial Ping
Wait 2 seconds, ping
wait (2+1)=3 seconds, ping again
wait ((2+1)+1)=4, ping again
wait 2 seconds, ping last time
Total time (wasted) = 11 seconds
The scenario is:
Initial ping,
Wait time out value, ping
Wait time out value plus 1, ping
Keep waiting and adding 1, ping
Last timeout will be original timeout
Total number of pings sent will be the "Retry value"
Retry of zero will be interpreted as "one ping only" (wasn't that a line
from Red October).

Subject: URGENT: Netmon grief
Hi, I really need some help on this one. How well do you know netmon?
Do you really understand how it status polls? I need some URGENT help
as the customer is not happy. We are running AIX 4.3.2 with NV 5.1.1
and netmon is driving me crazy. The network contains alot of WAN links
with around 300 interfaces. The poll timeout is set to 4s with 2
retries and a polling interval of 5 min. If there is no response on the
first poll does it poll 2 more times 4s each?
The event window reflects the traps in the trapd.log file but contains
interface down traps which are invalid (probably due to poll timeouts).
The icons on the map are not updated within a reasonable length of time
(takes several hours, sometimes never updated). What is going on?
Ran a netmon -M 1 trace and every 5 mins 300 interfaces are polled
which is correct. The timeouts for each interface is from 1 to 5
seconds. Also ran a trapd trace and noticed that the event queques are
being drained after they grow to 3 or 4 in size. After an indeterminate
length of time the netmon queque starts to grow and never is drained
(events are not forwarded to netmon?).
Any ideas? Sorry if the e-mail is a little rough as it is rather late
over here. I opened a call with IBM but I doubt if I will get much
help. Thanks alot.
