Default gateway

I'm using Netview 5.1 on AIX 4.2.1 and recently hit a problem where the default
gateway was unavailable and Netview reported all sorts of devices as being down
because it could not longer reach them.

How can I improve the reliability by not relying on one single device?  I'm not 
aware
of a way of having a second default gateway.
