There was an inconclusive discussion here recently about the 'Netview xxxxx
UP' event
appearing in reference to non-netview boxes. I cannot find the thread
today, but I saw
something interesting last week on V6. I had three of these non-Netview
boxes in the
Manager submap, and every time I started netmon I got these helpful events.
These
nodes were some kind of print servers. The snmp description provided by the
agent
was 'Print Server Card', but the snmp sysObject id was badly formed. It had
no dots
in it, and it changed frequently. Apparently there is something about that
oid, or
something Netview picks up off a port, that makes Netview think these
things are
Netview servers. I was unable to exclude them from discovery by oid, since
netmon
will not accept !@oid 2*, it needs the dots apparently. So I had to exclude
them by
address. Apparently the criteria we use to test for other Managers is
easily
fooled by badly-behaved snmp agents....

Cordially,
