Huh? I don't think I understood what you said in that re-create scenario. You
leave the GUI up and then you issue ovstop, and it doesn't complete for a couple
of days? And you just noticed that? Why did you leave the GUI up? What are
you trying to do that requires such a strange scenario? And why would you not
notice in 10 or 15 minutes that ovstop did not complete?
I am not certain that anyone can troubleshoot this at this time. But for
certain you should be taking down your GUIs before you use ovstop. And if you
want help with anything this weird then you need to open a ticket to Support.
The only place I can think to look for clues would be the nettl logs at this
point.
But ovstop (like ovstart and ovstatus) are commands to ovspmd. And he is the
one who carries them out. If this happens again, I would do a netstat -a and
see if there are socket problems, because if ovspmd is losing connection to
other processes, then there is likely some more serious problems on the box. We
have Version 6 running on dozens of boxes and have for months now, and no one
has ever seen anything like this. And so far as I know, there were no changes
to ovspmd nor pmd in Version 6.
What did you do to clean up? Did you kill all the processes or try another
ovstop? Did you read about daemon problems in the Diagnosis Guide? You might
want to restart the daemons and run a reset_ci before continuing.

Subject: [NV-L] ovstop does not complete
runnning Netview 6, AIX 4.3.2.0
I need some assistance in resolving the following matter:
1. All is okay if we start the Netview daemons, ovstart, and issue nv6000 to
start the gui.
We wait for the synchronization to complete then shutdown all the gui's and
issue an ovstop.
The ovstop takes about 2-5 minutes to complete.
2. now if we repeat step1 above with the exception of shutting down gui's
and issue an ovstop and let netview
run for a day or two before shutting netview down, then the ovstop process
does not complete.
When I canceled it, CTRL-C, I got "ovspmd: stop: aborting"
"ovstop: unable to receive status message from ovspmd: Connection
timed
out"
2.1 Following is the output , ps -ef|grep OV, of the Netview processes :
root 11404 22452 98 Jun 01 - 1009:42
/usr/OV/bin/pmd -Au -At -Mu -Mt -m
root 21948 1 0 Jun 01 - 0:00 /usr/OV/bin/ntl_reader 0 1 1
1 1000 /usr/OV/log/nettl
root 22452 1 0 Jun 01 - 0:32 /usr/OV/bin/ovspmd
root 22762 11404 0 14:12:57 - 0:00 /usr/OV/bin/deathtrap -l 21
root 24266 22452 0 Jun 01 - 0:00 /usr/OV/bin/nvsecd -O
Note: I followed the documentation applicable to our setup in the Release
Notes. I have not done much customization except for the netmon.seed file
which excludes non-snmp objects. This is not an upgrade from 5.1.2 it is a
new installation.
I need to know what to look for in order to resolve the problem that
prevents ovstop to complete.
