Bill,

Forgive me if you received a reply to this I did not see one.  What you are
seeing here is someone pinging nodes through the Netview Application from the
map.  Sometimes the gui for these pings will get behind other windows or closed
but the program will still be running.  Let me know if you have further
questions.
