Hmm.. Let me guess.. RedHat 6.x?

Look at your XF86Config file in /etc/X11. Try un-commenting the XkbDisable
line -- seems to have fixed it once.

Subject: [NV-L] General X and Linux Question

Greetings,

I have xfree86 running on a linux machine. I'm using it to run the NetView
console. I am able to start the GUI but don't get any character echo in
the
dialog boxes. Any ideas?
