Geoffrey,

There is some very detailed documentation on the Attended MLM (in HTML form)
installed with the NT NV software. Look in the \usr\ov\doc directory.

It is unfortunate that it is not also included in the product manuals.

Geoffrey -

You are trying to read way to much into a function that has been around for
some time. The term "regional manager" just designates the focal point
NetView. The idea is that in addition to MLMs, which have been around for
a long time, you could combine both the MLM and NetView on a box, so that
you could have a local GUI plus the ability to send all the usual MLM stuff
up to another NetView which would have on its own maps everything that this
local NetView does. You could have a local GUI, something MLM does not
have, and more centralized GUI showing more than just what the attended MLM
sees. From what I remember, there was plenty of marketing doc about this
when it was new several year ago, but frankly it has not been very popular,
from what I have seen. Work was done to allow netmon, trapd, and
midmand to coexist on the box but the basic characteristics of MLM did not
change. And it certainly does not represent a new architectural direction
nor an attempt mimic any new, or old, OpenView functions.

If you want to ask product direction questions then as an IBMer you should
know that you cannot get an answer on a public forum. Such information is
IBM/Tivoli Confidential and must be addressed to product management or to
the development group which owns the product. If you are in the dark just
whom those people are then send me a note off-line.

Subject: [NV-L] attended MLM and Regional NetView Server

Hi,

I read the NetView for NT user's guide and saw that MLM can be
installed on
NetView for NT using attended mode and then NetView for NT can be
acted
as a MLM. And it also use the term of "Regional Manager".

As MLM on NT can only use broadcast search for discovery polling, does
the
attended mode configuration enable netmon on NT to put its discovered
ip
     addresses into MLM discovery table?

Even the above is true, ip addresses entered into the MLM discovery
table
are still limited to the ones on the local subnet, is it correct?

Also, is it correct that between the claimed "Regional Manager" and
top level
manager, the only communication mechanism is still "trap".

Since the "Regional Manager" concept is mentioned, does it imply that
Tivoli
is going to build a manager to manager communication between NetView
for
NT and top level NetView to integrate object/topoloy database and
centralize
the configuration and control like what OpenView NNM is doing now?

     Thanks.

Best Regards,

Geoffrey Cheng
