Well, then Christina, you will have to call Support. You have no choice.

First, readcore is available only on AIX as I said. Since you did not
mention that you were on Solaris, we all assumed that you were on AIX,
since 80% of the NetView customers are. There is a core -reading utility
for Solaris called "readcoreg" but it is not shipped with the Solaris
version because it must be run in conjunction with gbd, which must be
compiled and sent to you, unless you have downloaded it for use with the
gcc compiler already. Open Source rules prevent us from shipping gdb with
NetView, and also from shipping readcoreg which loads it. So the bottom
line here is that only Support can help you read this core unless you have
C++ programming staff in house who are already using gdb or its full-screen
GUI version, ddd.

Second, unless you remind us when you post that you are down-level, we all
assume that you are current, which means you are at 6.0.2. That is the
advice you will get from Support about your core. They will tell you to
apply 6.0.2. Many netmon cores at the 6.0 level are fixed at 6.0.2. And
that is the level you need to be at in order for Support to help you if
this particular one re-occurs after you apply 6.0.2. Cores have many
causes but on thing is certian -- without a code update from Support there
is nothing you can do to avoid them.

You and your boss must understand that no one can help you if you do not
stay current with the required maintenance.

Thanks James, but my problem is much more easy, the operation guys didn`t
take note of the exit status. The boss has heard about the netmon failure,
and I need to explain him what happened.
Where can I find information about what happened?
I thought the core was a good idea...

Certainly, were on Netview 6.0 on solaris and cant find the readcore.

Christina,
You have to have it. readcore is shipped with NetView on AIX platforms and
has been since late in Version 5.1.
It is not is your normal path, /usr/OV/bin, but in /usr/OV/service. Please
look again. To use it, you
must first also have installed the native AIX tool, dbx, which readcore
uses to read the core. That is in /usr/bin.
Can't find it? Get out your AIX media and install it. Last time I did it,
it was in bos.adt.debug,
and you need to install via SMIT:

            Base Application Development Debuggers
            Base Application Development Libraries
            Base Application Development Toolkit
Then you can run /usr/OV/service/readcore and call Support.

Why call Support? Because even after you format the core.report it won't
mean very much unless you have the source code
code for netmon to look at. If you insist on trying to debug it yourself,
a
better way is to run the full netmon trace
(issue netmon -M -1 from the command line) and wait for it to core again.
Then look at the netmon.trace file to see what the
last thing it was doing when it died. But if the problem is internal to
netmon, you will have to call Support anyway,
because only they can give you a new executable which resolves the problem.
But you will have a much easier time
communicatring your problem to Support if you already have a core.reprot
and
a netmon.trace.

Hope this helps

or Does anybody want to share it with us?

Thanks, Cristina Alvarez.

There is a tool for that : /usr/OV/service/readcore

syntax :

/usr/OV/service/readcore <corefile>

it creates a file (core.report) in your current directory

good luck.
