Yup - your RDBMS does NOT have to be on the same system as NetView. You
need to
setup a RIM host, which is generally your NetView box. The RIM object then
has
a number of parameters including where the RDBMS machine itself is. (If you
go
to the new NV 7.1, you MUST install NetView on top of Framework to get this
RIM
capability, even though, there is no longer a mandate to install NetView on
top
of Framework, per se).

Once you have your RIM and RDBMS in place, you will need to install the
NetView
Database piece of the product - that gives you a bunch of scripts in
/usr/OV/scripts that you use to create the the NetView database and tables.

You will also have executables to export / archive data from the Op Sys data
files where NetView holds its databases, to your RDBMS. For sending
trapd.log
and SNMP data to the RDBMS, I think you will find there are some standard
maintenance scripts that will do your archive. To automate them, simply run
them through cron or use the Tivoli Framework to create Tasks and Jobs and
use
the Tivoli scheduler. The export / archive to your RDBMS is not real-time
but a
scheduled job - I believe this is for performance reasons.

Cheers, Jane
