This is a multipart message in MIME format. Maxine - Tivoli Support has nothing to do with it. "redbooks" are those publications from the IBM International Support Organization (ITSO). They cover a lot more than just Tivoli. They are technical how-to manuals, highly-prized by IBM field personnel and customers alike. It was originally designed as a systems management tool (part of Systems Monitor/6000), back when there were generally no more than 250 nodes on a subnet, and you were intended to put one MLM on each subnet. That's why it is limited to discovering its own subnet. But with the Smartset you can tell it to monitor what netmon has discovered. Keep this in mind: the data collection and the thresolding functions are different on MLM than they are on Netview. The traps are different, and the formats of the collected data are different, due to their heritage. There is a utility to convert MLM-collected data to the snmpCollect format, so you can then use some of the Netview facilities on it. If you are planning actions based on the threshold events, check them carefully in Options.. Event Configuration. The MLM data collection and thresholding offers a richer set of functions than does snmpCollect, and as a result it is trickier to configure. Read the online help carefully, as well as the manual which is offered online. There is a good redbook, still available and still applicable: SG24-4398-01 IBM Systems Monitor: Anatomy of a Smart Agent from February 1996. Cordially, Leslie A. More than the status monitoring i want my MLM to do the SNMP monitoring. I have seen with a sniffer that for the moment all the SNMP traffic is between the devices and The Netview but can i offload this work from Netview to the MLM? So it can reduce even more my WAN traffic Cordialement.
