Here's a trick that I use when I need to know how many objects are in a SUB-MAP:
1. Use the mouse to select everything in the sub-map by drawing a large box around everything
2. Pull-down Edit --> Hide Objects --> From This Submap
3. Read the number of hidden objects in the lower right information box  [Hidden: 138]
4. Pull-down Edit--> Unhide Objects --> From this Submap
