I think this should have gone to the list. :-)
Leslie's advice is always sound. I'd take it.

In addition to James' advice, let me add:
You MUST NOT edit the smartsets as you might edit the IP toplogy. ONLY use
the
Smartset editor. There is no way to make a heirarchary of submaps in the
Smartset topology.
To get lists of things that are in the smartsets, see the nvUtil command.
It is
very useful. It is documented in the man page (assuming you are on Unix).
Nodes are displayed on the map with short names, otherwise it would get
very crowded with long labels. The Selection Name is whatever the address
the node was discovered by resolves to (in /etc/hosts or DNS). You can
see it in the Object info.
So, to see things in relation to each other and their place in the
network,
work on the IP Internet topology. The instructions for cutting and pasting
that into managable chunks using Location icons, see the Admin Guide.
To group things to meet specific business needs, use the Smartset
topology.
Aside from the online manuals, the online help in the various dialogs
is very helpful.
There are also some Redbooks that you will find instructive.
See http://www.redbooks.ibm.com
__ Redbooks SG24-4515 Examples of Using Netview for AIX V4
__ Redbook SG24-5285 Integrated Management
Solutions Using Netview V5.1
__ Redbook SG24-6019 Tivoli Netview 6.01 and Friends
__ Redbook SG24-6229 Extending Network Management
Through Firewalls
The V4 redbook is the one that covers Smartsets, as
well as the Ruleset
Editor, because V4 was when those functions were
introduced.

Subject: Re: [nv-l] Netview documentation -- smartsets
Chris -
You still haven't told us what platform you have , and since the UNIX and
NT versions have differences, it is difficult to speak to both in detail.
But in either case, you cannot force a new object to be part of smartset,
unless that particular one is just a collection of names to begin with. A
smartset is collection of objects already in your database, grouped by
attributes or properties. So you can create one based on vendor, for
example, or some other database field. If the object you want to add does
not have this field set, then it won't be part of the smartset. So to
"force" an object into an smartset you would have to alter the properties
of that object. You might be able to do that with nvdbimport, depending
on what type of field you are setting. Basically you can see the object
properties for an object by right clicking and selecting object properties
or by using "ovobjprint -s <selection_name>" from the command line.
You can edit a smartset and change the rule, or collection criteria, for
that smartset. That is also a way to add something to a smartset. The
collection criteria, as they are called, can be varied and compound. Try
"collected" from the command line in UNIX or pull down the Submap GUI in
NT and click New Smartset. On UNIX also check out the nvUtil command.
Just type in "nvUtil -?" .
I am not certain what to say about your other questions. A smartset is a
collection of existing objects, so it's submap is a list of those objects,
and their submaps will be whatever ones they already have. I don't see
why you would want to add something, and I am not certain how you would go
about that.
As for object names, the objects should have the same names they have on
the regular IP Internet map. For most objects, NetView only displays up
to the first dot in the fully qualified name.
More questions? Just post to the list but you should not direct them to
me. There are lots of people out here with as much or more experience
customizing NetView to show what they want than I have.

James, thanks for the reply.
We have version 6.0.2. I have checked the documentation, but cannot find
the
answers that I'm looking for.
I'd like to know if you can manually add devices into a smartset?
Why when creating smartsets that if filtering by "Selection Name" the
whole name
of the device doesn't show up on the map? They all have the same
shortened
name. Is there a file that that info is stored in?
How do I add a child submap to a smartset?
These probably seem a little elementary, but I'm new.
Thanks for all the help,
Chris

What version of NetView do you have?
The documentation ships with the product, in both html and pdf format. On
UNIX see /usr/OV/books/C and pick tml or pdf. Ditto on NT,
\usr\ov\books\c

Subject: [nv-l] Netview documentation
Hello,
I'm looking for some help with Netview. I've just been handed the
application and have an admin guide and that's about it. Does anyone know
where
I can get more electronic documentation? Specifically, I'm looking for
more info
on smartsets. I've tried the Tivoli website but find it very difficult to
maneuver . Unfortunately, we also have no Tivoli support. Any and all help
is
appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris Klunder
