I meant to say; "....or at least routers that netmon CAN'T manage via snmp or CANNOT discovery." Sorry for any confusion but most probably figured out the typo.

I believe what you are after is new functionality added to RFI in NetView 7.1.2. It deals with subnets that don't have routers or at least routers that netmon can manage via snmp or even discover. In this case it uses a probalistic algorithm (who's parameter's are user configurable) to work out how many devices (other than routers) it should poll (all would have to be unsuccessful) before it is reasonable to assume that subnet is "unReachable" and thus suppress events and/or stop polling nodes in that "unReachable" network. It sounds like this would be perfect for you in the situation you describe.

Our Netview NT 6.0.2 seems to do a nice job of suppressing unnecessary
polls beyond a failed router via the RFI feature.   I was wondering if
there is some way to get netview to treat other devices as though they were
routers, and thus eligible for RFI.

for example, we have a subnet in a DMZ beyond a firewall.   then the
firewall fails, netview still sends a flood of polls to the downstream
servers.  I have been accused of 1200/polls per second (I don't believe
this, but the logs are coming....gasp ).

Anyways, in the meantime,  is there a way to get netview to treat this
firewall like a router, suppressing polling beyond it when the firewall is
down?

thanks for any ideas
