Jim,
Dont worry about salvaging it. Go ahead and uninstall it,
then reinstall it. All the data in the backup directory
is still there and will be migrated again. So you wont
lose anything by uninstalling.

Good idea - I've got lots of space, tho. Thanks Paul, I hadn't checked that yet. But I found the problem - WINZIP! I untarred the CDROM tarfile from Passport Advantage with Winzip with Smart CR/LF translation enabled (the default). With this particular file, FILE19.PKT, it will mistakenly translate characters, rendering the file corrupted. Below, "FILE19.PKT" is the good file untarred by Winzip with smart CR/LF turned off, the other is the original. They have different sizes: -rw-r----- 1 25583 system 189808956 Mar 01 13:27 FILE19.PKT -rw-r----- 1 25583 system 191578978 Mar 01 12:32 FILE19.PKT.winzip_default.untar If you test the original file with sapack "preview" mode, it gives the same error I got during the upgrade: $ ../patch/7.1.4-NVS-CDROM/instbund/bin/aix5-r1/sapack -upP ./FILE19.PKT.winzip_default.untar
messages:
unpack: input error (err=54, blkno=2)
FATAL.
(If there is interest, I can post an sapack manpage, with warnings and disclaimers...) The new FILE19.PKT, untarred with Winzip without smart CR/LF enabled, works fine with sapack. I have now placed the files in usr/OV that it would have under normal conditions. SO! I have an answer to my Question#1. As for Question#2: I captured the after script from the next FilePackage block, FILE20.PKT. So, given that I can unpack FILE19.PKT and place the resulting files in /usr/OV, I should be able to execute the commands in the after script from FILE20.PKT. Question#2 now becomes: Is there anything else that instalnv or children do beyond the effects of wserverc and it's children? If not, I can salvage this upgrade. If so, I'm not so sure. Also looking for help with Question#3... Thanks,
-Jim

I would check your disk space those particular files(especially www.tar)
    are very large.
