Sounds like you have a bug to report!

I have one suggestion first though. Does the device have the ability to set up
a different community strings for read, read/write and trap access? Is one of
these set to the community being used by Netview? We had a problem once with
third party software which was occasionally using the trap community when
requesting data from a device even though the read and read/write communities
were OK. When the trap community was updated the authentication failures
stopped. The third party software must have been making use of the communities
setup for the device and using these in its requests. I didn't think Netview
did this though.

Hi. We are running Netview 7.1.4 on AIX 5.1 with these patches:

FixPack1, IY50663, IY51641, IY52429, IY54434, IY56958, IY60528

We have some routers that send authentication failure traps denoting Netview's
IP address.

I ran a capture this morning and caught Netview using the correct community
strings for this device in all cases, except one instance. It tried to get
sysUptime 3 times with the wrong string and then switched to the correct string.

The SNMP config is correct, and demandpolls and quicktests work correctly.

What would cause Netview to query periodically using the wrong strings?

Thanks for any help!

Craig
