Be sure to use only the smartset editor (Tools...Smartset Editor) to create or modify the smartset, or the nvUtil command. Sorry if this is too simplistic, but I don't want to assume anything.  The name of the object for the smartset itself will be <smartsetname>.CF. You can see it in the database with
   ovobjprint -s UPS.CF
for example. It normally has very few attributes. Compare it to some other smartsets.

Also, I have seen trouble with smartsets that were created on SuSE linux using the old colmaint command, as might be done when migrating from another platform. Creating them anew using the editor made them stable.

Re: [NV-L] Smartset gets deleted automatically

It's a strange problem all right, because NetView has no method of deleting smartsets automatically so far as I know, short of clearing the databases or de-installing the product. They only get deleted when you use the clear databases facility with the "do not save customizations" option. They can also be deleted with nvUtil manually but that is all. Since there is no automatic deletion mechanism, there is no mechanism to trace.

Do an "nvUtil L" and get a list of all your smartsets, or "nvUtil G" to get a list with their descriptions and rules. Are you sure the "UPS" one is gone?
Or is it there and just empty? "nvUtil l UPS" with a lower case letter "l" will list the members.

What is the criteria for membership in UPS? Could it be that the node attributes in the database are getting changed so that nodes lose membership?

For example, if part of the criteria is "isSNMPSupported" and the community name gets changed so that the node doesn't respond during a config check, then netmon will change that database attribute to FALSE and that node will no longer be considered part of the smartset.

[NV-L] Smartset gets deleted automatically

NetView 7.1.4 -FP04 on RH3

I am facing a strange problem of SMARTSETS named "UPS" get deleted
automatically after some days from Netview

Request your suggestions on the possible cause of the problem? And how
will I trace the smartest related activities?

Best regards,
Anvaj
