For anyone who missed the webcast today on new features in NetView
7.1.5, the foils are available at
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=swg27008665
There's some good stuff in there especially around the new SNMP data
collection and some of the integration with ITM 6.
Questions that were not answered on the webcast but hopefully will be
forthcoming, are as follows:
1) The installation is now non-Framework - you cannot install it using
Tivoli methods - but the instalnv command has a "-f" parameter which
apparently "ties NetView to Framework". Presumably this is to make RIM
access possible for NetView data? Does this work for a Linux
NetView??? In other words, does this mean that we now have a way to get
trap and snmp data out of NetView on Linux into an RDBMS, other than
going through the tdwdaemon into Tivoli Data Warehouse 1.x?? (And no -
there is no support for TDW 2.x).
2) We now have support for the SNMP V2 protocol. It can be configured
from the usual SNMP configuration GUI and info is stored in the
ovsnmp.conf database. The default is to use SNMP V1. An option can be
set in /usr/OV/conf/netmon.conf, SNMP_RETRY_ALTERNATE_VERSION=TRUE ,
that says if the default protocol version fails, then try the other
one. What was not quite answered on the webcast was, "Can we have SNMP
V2 as the default with SNMP V1 tried as the alternate version"?
3) Lots of clarification is needed around the new support in servmon for
ITM6. Good news is that servmon can check UDP ports as well as TCP
ports (DNS and SNMP for example). Do we just get one SmartSet for
isITMEndpoint=TRUE , or do we get separate ones for the 2 flavours of
ITM?? How is the check performed? What are the TEC "impact events"
created "for any device managed by ITM"? There is a comment on foil 34
of the presentation about the itmquery -add-server needing an http or
https prefix - does this apply to ITM 5 servers AND ITM 6 servers??
4) There looks to be some really neat information powering ITM 6
workspaces (like graphs of Trap Queue size and Ping / SNMP latency).
How is this information gathered from NetView (scripts??) and can these
methods by used by folk who don't yet have ITM 6?? Where would we find
them??
5) There are also some default ITM 6 situations defined for problems
with the health of the NetView application. Is there also a TEC baroc
file so that these ITM 6 Situations can be forwarded to and interpreted
by TEC?? If so, where do we find it? Is there a TEC rules file to go
with it?
Many thanks to Bruce Urquhart for tackling all my questions!
Cheers,
jane
