It is all done with name resolution. Traps from devices ( " A " in trapd.log) are labeled with the DNS or /etc/hosts name for the address they come from. Netview events ( " N " in trapd.log) have the Selection Name of the device, which is the DNS name for the address it was discovered by.

There is a lot of discussion of naming in the archives, and you might do some reading there. There are different approaches, such as forcing discovery by the loopback address of routers, and ensuring that the loopback is in DNS. You can also configure the devices to send their traps from the loopback, so they come in with a resolvable name instead of the address of the nearest serial interface.

[NV-L] Traps by hostname





Hi,

Iam using Netview 7.1.4.4 on AIX 5L , DB is Oracle 9i.
Do netview send trap by Hostname, already iam getting trap by  IP address. Can I able to get trap by both identity when an event occurs. Please advice me on this
