I mention this because there has recently (and also many times in the past) been discussion of discovery basics and in particular, the exact questions you are asking.

Re: [NV-L] Seed File discovery

Dear Jane,

Ok. Thanks for your prompt reply. Since im in remote location i cannot take the course right now. I'm also going through netview documents and i can see you guyz are doing great work here answering most of the questions. Can you please guide me for this seedfile discovery?

1. Do i need to clear the databases before implementing the new seed file?
    smit nv6000
    Maintain-->clear databases

2. When launching the see editor via launch_seededit, can we give the list of hostnames we need to discover in Set initial Discovery

3. Do we need to give anything in Limit Discovery--Limit by IP address?

4. How long it will take (say example 500 nodes) to discover approxiamtely?

Also, let me know if you anyone knows a mailing-list/Forums for TEC and ITM like the one you are having for Netview.
I need it for some event correaltion exercises.

- Sudha

Hi Sudha,
You know - you are now covering the NetView for Unix for Administrators
class - unit 5 topics.  I know this course is offered in India and I
really would recommend that you try and attend it as it will answer so
many of your questions, as well as giving you lots of practical
exercises where you can make mistakes on someone else's kit!!

Failing that, you need to read up on the netmon seedfile and about
location.conf - by default you will find examples in /usr/OV/conf and
they both have lots of commented lines at the top that document their
functionality.

Cheers,
Jane
