I'm a technical guy, not a marketer.
Good news. Now the question some customers want answered... If I am under maintainence for Netview, and I have less than 5000 (or 1000?) managed nodes, can I move this product for no additional cost?? The Entry Edition of the that product, NetView's replacement for smaller customers, debuted yesterday, September 19, 2007. You can read the announcement letter here. http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS207-199 It features a much simplified install, a set of tools to migrate your location .conf, your discovered nodes, and your SNMP community strings, from NetView, as well as a number of convenience features, such as default user accounts and views, pre-configured for you, to make it more usable out of the box. And it is the first Tivoli product to feature canned reports based on the new Tivoli Common Reporting tool. I've installed and used it myself as part of the beta. It's a vast improvement over the complexity of Precision IP for those just getting started. You'll still have a rather steep learning curve to get used to the Network Manager way of doing things over NetView, but this product allows you to get something up and working in just a couple of hours, as opposed to days it used to take. It perfect for trying before you buy or for proof-of-concept installation as well. Lots of business partners are excited. You just might be too. HOW SMALL IS SMALLER? I was told that the price is about half what a comparable IP Edition installation would be, but the network size is limited by the license agreement to 5000 network devices (router and switches) with 5 monitored servers equal to one network device. The exact price is subject to whatever you can work out with your IBM marketing rep, of course. That hasn't changed. PS: Customers have also been told that NetView will remain in support until at least 2012, but there are no plans to pick up any new operating systems or new levels during that time.
