The Tivoli Support Technical Exchange (STE) organization has a webcast on the newer snmp data collector mechanism that was introduced with NetView 7.1.5. The webcast is tomorrow (Tuesday). Details from :

As the leader of the NetView Tivoli User Group I am currently actively soliciting suggestions for webcasts for the group. One suggestion that I have had from 2 folk is a comparison of NetView and ITNM. I would appreciate input from this list if that would be of interest. If you are signed up to the TUG, no need to respond here also. If you want to join the TUG, please feel free to do so (you can access the TUG home page at www.tivoli-ug.org and then select a group to join). If you don't want to join the TUG - that's fine - I'd still appreciate input on webcasts you would like to see around NetView.

I have used both products though ITNM not nearly so much as NetView and I would totally agree with the comments by both John and Andres. NetView, especially on an AIX / Linux platform is rock solid - less so on Windows. ITNM is a huge product. Development has done a lot of work on the Entry version to ease installation of what is effectively 3 different products (the old Precision IP, Omnibus and Webtop) but it is still much harder to install and get working. If you look, for example, at Tivoli education for Precision, the pre-reqs are a 5-day class on Omnibus and, I believe, another 2 days on Webtop - that's before you start on the "network management" education. The layer 2 support is there out-of-the box with ITNM; with NetView you had to add on (and pay for) the Switch Analyzer product. The other argument I have heard several times against ITNM is the cost.

John - you say you are migrating to a non-IBM product even though you seem to be a happy NetView user. Did you evaluate ITNM? May we know what you decided to migrate to?

Cheers,
Jane

Hi List,

Has anyone used both of these products (NV & ITNM) in a produciton enviornemnt? Is ITNM better than Netview, feature wise, (excluding the looks n feels). I have seen ITNM but never used it in production. Any input is appreciated!

Regards,
Usman
