...And, if you are on V5.1, there is the nvdbimport command! Use this to
automatically define fields
and load values in them. See the man page and the samples in
/usr/OV/conf/nvdbtools or something
like that. This, and nvdbformat are my favorite new things in 5.1.

While nvdbimport will define fields for you on the fly, you should
pre-define them if you want to make
collections based on them. Give them the Locate capability. This makes it
possible to use them
for things like Locate..By Attribute, etc. That is the only capability I
add, otherwise you can run into
trouble deleting nodes with fields set.

When you do a Tools..Display Object Info, your fields will be at the very
bottom. This is great for recording
things like circuit numbers, contacts, store numbers, the kinds of things
that might be saved in a
spreadsheet somewhere. You can then export the spreadsheet and import the
data batch-wise, provided
you have one column that matches the Selection Name or IP Hostname of the
device it goes with.

Is this a great product, or what!

That list is read-only, taken from your object database. You cannot modify
it through the GUI.

Basically, you are asking to add a field to the NetView database, and then
populate objects with that field, and then create collections based on that
field value. To add a field, you will need to add a field definition file
to /usr/OV/fields/C and run ovw -fields. Then to populate it, you will
have to write a program in C using the NetView APIs or create a ruleset and
generate traps to drive that ruleset to do it. Other users may have code
they will be willing to share. Building the collection is the easy part
and you already know about that.

This is not a simple process. I would urge you to read about creating and
using fields in the NetView Programmer's Guide.

Subject: Customize Object Attribute

Hi all,
I want to create a customize object attribute in Collection Editor. Does
anyone have a procedure how to do this? The menu path of my question is:
Tools/Collection Editor/Add/Modify. Then there is a list of Object
Attributes but I want to create a customize one. Thanks.

Phat Doan
