Good morning,

How can we deal with Community String Indexing in Netview ?

Usually a particular SNMP entity only contains one instance of the
MIB, and one community string is assigned to one IP address.
But particular devices such as Cisco Catalyst switches include
one instance of the standard BRIDGE-MIB for each Virtual LAN in the
switch. If the read-only community string is "public" and the read-write
community string is "private", one could use "public@25" to read the
BRIDGE-MIB for VLAN 25 and use "private@33" to read and write the
BRIDGE-MIB for VLAN 33. If just "public" or "private" is used, the
BRIDGE-MIB for VLAN 1 is accessed.

Traps sent from a mib that is indexed by community string also indicate
which instance of the mib it corresponds to be using a community string
indexing.

The problem is that we access the device with 1 IP address but may have
multiple community strings to use, depending on what information we
want to have (e.g. multiple VLAN for BRIDGE-MIB or SNMP-REPEATER-MIB).

I don't think this is a problem regarding the netmon's polling activity
for status, but could it be for configuration polling or discovery
polling ?
Also, how can we address this problem for data collection and thresholds
or MIB applications ?

Any help or comment highly appreciated ||||

Best regards
