First, you are right that the affect will be global.

Second, the color is determined by the status. You set status on an object and
ovw interprets that as a color.
So for a symbol ("icon" as you call it) to have a different color it has to have
a different status. That is why you change the status source to change the
color of that symbol. When it is compound propagated it has no status of its
own to change. When you make the status source symbol, now you can change it.
Do you follow me?

The only other thing I can offer is that the Programmer's Guide has sections on
objects and status and the all the APIs for messing with this are documented in
the Programmer's Reference. This is not a trivial undertaking.

Good luck.

Thanks James. I assume if we set the "overrideCompoundStatus" to "True"
that this is global and will affect all node symbols in all the NV maps and
submaps, correct? Is there any way to specifically target a color change
for a specific symbol in a specific NV submap(e.g., change the symbol color
for node A in NV collection X to red, but leave node A in NV collection Y
green)? I don't think this is possible short of writing one's own
application that creates its own symbols and submaps and integrates with NV
at the "Root" submap. If this is true, does anyone know which NV API calls
control and change the symbol color of a node within the NV submaps? I am
familar with the NV API for manipulating fields, etc...., but have not done
anything thus far with creating my own icons, changing symbol colors,
etc....

Well, you cannot get what you asked for -- a way to override the status
source
when the collection is built -- at least I am aware of no such way.

But if what you are trying to do is use the 58916871 or other trap to change
the
status on a compound object, then you should be able to tell nvevents to do
the
change himself.

In the Nvevents app-defaults file you should be able to change

nvevents.overrideCompoundStatus : False

to True

(remember -- no space after the "e" and you will have to do xrdb -merge
if
you are running the CDE to get this new default to be picked up while you
are
logged in)

Is it possible to globally define the default "Status Source" of all new
nodes added to any particular NV collection? We want to be able to change
the symbol color of nodes in a NetView collection(using a specific NV trap),
but the "Status Source" of the symbol must be defined as "Symbol" in order
for us to do so. Currently, the default is setup as "Compound Propagated"
for all NV collections, so we can not change the color of symbols as new
symbols are added to a collection without manually doing this change first
from the NV GUI. We want this to be dynamic so we do not have to use the
GUI for every node in the collection to change the "Status Source"
parameter.
