Polling is controlled by your settings in SNMP Configuration. Status polling is
what causes netmon to send traps when interfaces and nodes are down (fail to
respond to ping). You can review or change them with xnmsnmpconf. The order of
preference is the same as you see it in xnmsnmpconf. If an interface appears
there, then those are the values used. If not, and it is in a wildcard range
(such as 15.212.*.*) then that will be used. If not in a wildcard range but in
a collection, then the collection setting will be used. And finally, if none of
the others apply, then the global default will be used.
In earlier versions of NetView, if a device (router) had more than one
interface, then all were polled on the same cycle as the main, or first
discovered, one. In Netview 5.1 this is no longer true. In order that you can
control polling by wildcards and collections, each interface is treated
separately.
And yes, if a an interface does not respond to ping according to the cycle
defined in SNMP Configuration (Timeout, and Retry Count within the Status
Polling interval), then netmon will issue an Interface Down trap. If the box
has only one interface, this will be followed by a Node Down Trap. If the box
has more than one interface, a Node Marginal trap will be sent when the first
interface goes down. You won't get a Node Down until all interfaces are
unavailable. .
Hope this helps.
