Well, it mysteriously started working (I took credit for it, of course). I
suspect that
Uwe is onto something, because it started working when I switched on/off
debug
mode for it in smit. That must have done something stronger than a refresh.
Stronger than a reboot, too. Apparently it does not re-read the config file
for just
any old reason. For the record... and thanks, team.

Hi Leslie,
I thing the refresh command isn't right for that case. You can use
stopsrc syslogd and startsrc syslogd.
Best regards
Uwe

RE: AIX 4.3.2 syslog.conf and cisco logging
I've got the same thing in my syslog.conf and my routers write to it
without
a problem. I'm running AIX 4.2.1.
Here are my permissions on /var/log and /var/log/nmslog:
root@nv6000:/var/log >ls -la
total 9618
drwxr-xr-x 2 root system 512 Nov 29 13:49 .
drwxr-xr-x 15 bin bin 512 Dec 30 01:02 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root system 4923189 Jan 14 06:58 nmslog
Have them make sure they have a router setup of with follow global Cisco
command:
logging ip_addr
where ip_addr is the ip address of your syslog server. If you enter
config
mode (conf t) on the router and exit (CTRL-Z), it should generate a
message
that gets logged to your syslog server.

Subject: AIX 4.3.2 syslog.conf and cisco logging
I'm stuck, and I'm sure someone out there knows what I'm doing wrong.
If not, I'll call AIX support and ask the dumb question.
There is an 4.1 system with old netview & ciscoworks on it. It got a new
address and I used the old address on a brand new box, AIX 4.3.2, latest
recommended maintenance. Routers were logging to the old box. Now
they should log to the new box using the syslog facility. I added the
record
'local7.info /var/log/nmslog' to syslog.conf and did a refresh -s
syslogd.
The directory exists (I created it), but nothing is showing up. Is there
something
else I had to do? No one here remembers how they got it working on the
old
box
but I believe it was actually set up by the install of Ciscoworks V3.
Suggestions welcome...
