Oid 1783 is the the private enterprise code for Active Software, so that is
the
enterprise that traps from those devices will be using. 'Enterprises' is
generic,
but everything after that is not. They are down the private branch of the
mib tree.
If the agent on the device is not capable of answering the question you are
posing (1.3.6.1.4.1.1783.1.1, or ..activesw.broker.trap), then you will not
get any
help from Netview, or from any other snmp-based manager. Loading the mib
will help by allowing Netview to translate variables in the trap from
dotted
decimal format into words.
It is possible that those MIB entries are only there for documentation
purposes.
That is, they are not supposed to be answered when you query them.
Generally you must get definitions of traps from the vendor, or from the
hardware
manuals. If you configure the device to send all traps to the Netview
machine,
you will see them come in on the events display. They will have an unknown
format, and you must configure Netview to display them in a nicer way. This
is
done in Options...Event Configuration by 1) adding the enterprise (that is,
1.3.6.1.4.1.1783, or whatever is specified on the incoming trap), and then
adding
the traps (generic and specific identifiers again from the incoming trap),
and
a message that includes meaningful words and any variables that are
included.
No doubt the trap will include that 1783.1.1 message string. I suspect that
all of
the enterprise specific traps will have the same variable with different
text.
I would look at the hardware manual for the device in question and see if
there
is a chapter on SNMP. They may list the traps it can send. If not, you
should
contact the vendor. Or wait for traps to come in, and see if their meaning
is clear.

We are looking at using Active Works products at our shop and wish to use
NetView to monitor it. Active Software either can't or won't supply details
for the "ACTIVESW-BROKER-MIB" information. I do know that we need to import
RFC1155-SMI and RFC1213-MIB. The actual activesw MODULE uses the
::= {enterprises 1783 } (I believe this rfc is generic)
broker OBJECT IDENTFIER ::= { activesw 1 }
trap OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= {broker 1 }
message OBJECT-TYPE
SYNTAX DisplayString
ACCESS read-only
STATUS mandatory
DESCRIPTION "Message describing alert or warning
condition"
I need to know what messages are alerted through snmp for Active Works?
I have looked at http://www.funet.fi/pub/netinfo/rfc/ and there are no
specifics to Active Software or brokers.
Admittedly, I new at MIBs and SNMP. I could use some help from anyone using
NetView and Active Works. THANK YOU in advance.
