Let me point out a basic distinction here that might help clarify the
situation. While the definition of variables (OBJECT-TYPE, etc) is
required (probably by some standard or other that James can name),
the definition of traps in mib files is not. The variables are defined in
the mib files so that snmp managers like Netview can query and set
them. The inclusion of TRAP-TYPE entries is purely a convenience,
a form of documentation using the same notation as the rest of the
mib. It is meant for human use. The inclusion of the mib2trap command
in Netview is an attemt to automate that human use. Sometimes it
works better, sometime worse. If the agent vendor decides not to
document his traps in this way, then it works not at all. Traps often
include variables in them, and having the mibs loaded allows Netview
to inlcude the names of the variables in the full-blown trap in the events
display, but that is all. Hope this helps.

Ken -

Most of the MIB tools provided in NetView expect that the user is very
familiar
with MIB syntax and usage, and as such they do not go into detail about MIB
constructs. But unless a MIB contains TRAP-TYPE statements, or
NOTIFICATION-TYPE statements, then it does not define a trap, and there is
nothing for mib2trap to do. Many MIBs contain information about variables
the
MIB agent will populate, and that you can obtain via snmpGet, but that does
not
mean that the agent will send a trap if those values change.

Thanks James, this is not clear in the MAN page for mib2trap.

After reviewing several MIB files, including IBM's, it appears most are
based as
OBJECT_TYPE. Is there a reason that the mib2trap file only looks for
TRAP_TYPE
or NOTIFICATION-TYPE and wouldn't include the others? Most of the other
keywords mib2trap looks for seem to be present.

It looks like the only recourse is addtrap from here.
