Odd. Netview does not use the system.sysName that the router reports.
It does retrieve it and store it in the object database as routersysname.
It
uses this to assist it in managing hsrp interfaces. But the label on the
map will be the name in DNS or /etc/hosts, depending on how your
name resolution is set up, AND.... it will show you only the first part up
to the dot. So 'router.' would be an unfortunate first part, if that were
in DNS.
I have never seen Netview use a sysname as a label or a Selection Name.
I know HP Openview uses it, but I have seen too many customer networks
where this field is misused, poorly administered, or unused, to think it is
a
good idea. (What are you really running there, Danny?)
So what exactly do you mean when you say it is using it? Using it where?
(I'm sure everyone will correct me if I'm wrong about this, right???)

Subject: [NV-L] How does NetView determine the hostname and IP Name to
use?
Hi All
(Problem number 2 of the day)
We have a number of new routers that have hostnames set to
"router.<hostname>.<domain>".
What I mean by this is:
router is the word "router"
<hostname> is the hostname we have in our /etc/hosts file that maps to the
IP address we use in the seedfile to discover the router.
<domain> is the DNS domain
Is there a way of telling NetView to use the hostname set in the /etc/hosts
or DNS or NIS maps as the IP Name, hostname and Selection Name for a device
rather than the hostname that the device reports?
Cheers,
Danny Williams
