I have done (1) in your list.
I wrote a system whereby my Netview rule would run scripts which ran a program
that issued emails & SMS messages to support staff (based on device location,
time of day and event type). This application logged the events it received
from Netview.
I then use a program that takes that log file and build linked lists in memory
such that I can get a list of each device that Netview is monitoring and each
event that occurs on that device. From that list I produce a report that shows
the number of times each device has been down and the outage for each of the
events. This is then used to monitor the performance of the service providers
as you wish to do.
As a side issue the email/SMS code also keeps in memory the details of each
device that is currently down and has a socket interface that allows other
users to run a small Windows based client application that gives them a
ticker-tape display of devices that are currently down. This allows our Help
Desk staff to keep track of what is down without the overhead of running
multiple X-Windows sessions (our Netview box and the Help Desk staff are 15t00
miles apart with only a 2Mbps link between them - hence the lack of X-Windows)
and stops them having to run the Web based access to Netview.

Hi All
These are architectural questions rather than a techinical ones.
1. Have any of you have used NetView in anger as a tool to monitor the
service levels being provided by a network provider? My initial thoughts
are that one could correlate interface down & up traps/events to establish
the amount of time a line was unavailable and then put this informaton in
to a file for offline processing.
2. I know that NetView is capable of monitoring the throughput on network
interfaces, but have any of you used NetView to pinpoint large data
transfers and the associated bottlenecks?
Any information that you guys (and gals) can provide on these items would
be greatly appreciated.
It may be that there are more appropriate tools for each of these functions
- if so, please net me know.
