I believe you can contact Support for a fix to this problem for 6.0.2 or
later. But I didn't think that 5.1 had the option of an alternative
community names file. I thought communityNames.conf was a 6.0 feature,
which is why I asked the question.

This is the same problem I had. I found that when I use 2 community names
during discovery the default "public" and the one we use for our Cisco
devices "xxxxxxxx" the communtiy names for all my devices are being changed
to the Cisco community name. So when I try to start the map I get
"portmapper already running" and the map nevers comes up. I then check thur
xnmsnmpconf and the community name being used for
my netview server is changed to the Cisco one. I corrected it and the map
starts.

Great, David, but I am still puzzled. How did these things get deleted in
the first place? They would have and should have all been done at
installation time as part of the normal installation process. Has somebody
with root authority just been deleting stuff out of or what?

Hello all,
I am running Netview 5.1 on AIX 4.3.1 (don't worry, I am in
the process of upgrading to 6.02) and I have a problem. It first started
out by netmon not running because it could not communicate with the SNMP
agent via Loopback address (127.0.0.1). I was able to ping it so I went
into xnmsnmpconf and added it there and then went into ovsnmp.conf and
added it there. I got netmon running but now when I attempt to start
netview I get the message: Portmap is already running and it just sits
there and does not generate any more messages and it does not bring up the
map..The loopback address and netview server IP address are in the host
file Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...
