There is probably a reason why you havedone this on the Root map
rather than on the IP Internet map that just is not clear to me. Don't the
customer branches reside on separate subnets? Generally such
networks have some nodes in common, in the center, and the remote
sites fan out around those. I would try to make a Location icon for each
customer site on the IP Internet map, and Cut the remote router and
subnets for each customer into that subnet. Start out by leaving your
core switches and routers and networks on the top level. If the connection
to the remote site is serial (a straight line), leave it that way. If the
connection is something else (eg frame), then you also have a
subnet bubble. I would put that bubble in the remote site. If the
stuff left in the core is very complex, you can cut all of that and paste
it into a central location icon. You end up with a hub and spoke
arrangement. Try doing this manually first, and then maybe capture the
results and set up the location.conf file for use on your next rediscovery.

If the different customer nodes are on common subnets, for instance
a subnet with a lot of servers, your best bet is Smartsets. Then you
can leave a view of the Smartset topology up for your At A Glance
view. Make a Smartset for each customer. Hint: Name them so you
can make use of the alpha sorting of the submap (eg A_Customer1).
Define the membership of the smartset using the Object List form,
or, if your naming convention allows, you can base it on Selection Name.

You can try this without disturbing your present arrangement.
Take a backup of your current database with only one map (if you have
only one map). Then File...New Map. That does not rediscover, it only
makes a new map from your current topology database. Try your
arrangements there. If you get to something you like, you can delete
the current map and save the new one as the default, and then delete
the new one. (It is best to keep to a single map if possible.)

I hope this helps.

Hi Leslie,

Thank you for all of your input, really appreciated.

We manage multiple customers on a very large IP Internet map. The only way
we can at a glance see what branch is down is to create smaller maps for
individual customers. Within these customers maps are ip submaps ie
branches. What we usually do:

1. discovery using seed file.
2. Create a generic location object for customer in the root map.
3. copy IP subnet object from IP Internet map
4. paste under generic object of the customer (becomes branches of the
customers)

Before, the operator looking at the root map with all customers(one generic
location per customer), he can tell in one sec whether anything of the
customer's site is down. But now, the operator can't tell because the color
is not propagating through to the top generic location in root map. (or the
IP subnet).

How can we keep a similar hierachial map structure for our operators?
What is the proper way to do this? Using location.conf? (cause we might
rebuild the Netview box later)

Jack.

Here's the deal: the ipmap application, the one that makes color changes
on your map, manages the IP Internet Topology on the root submap. Any
topologies you add to the root submap are for you to manage with your own
application. That is why I said the Copy function was not really there for
you
to use. Since Netview was designed as an integration platform, many of the
functions in it are intended for the developers of management applications.
What you are doing is something that is often attempted. And it will look
like
it works, for a while. But it is not supported. You may be able to get it
to work
again by adjusting the status source of each symbol, but it will still be
unsupported. I promise you that what you are seeing is working as designed.

There are sure to be supported alternatives. Describe your requirements in
more
detail, and we can come up with something in the way of a proper cut/paste.

Hi Leslie,

Before the Netview upgrade to 6.02, we had 5.1, and colors of the copy and
pasted maps were propagating through. And 6.02 doesn't (e.g. router
interfaces - one red, one green, but router is GREEN, which was yellow
before the upgrade).

Please let me explain why we are using copy and pasted maps. It is because
we separates logical geographical branches for each clients. So we have a
generic object for each client, and under that, we have IP submaps of the
branch offices. So we did not use Smartsets.

Do you think it will help it I turn the router fault isolation off?
How else can I solve this color problem? It is affecting the daily
operation
people, because they look at the map with all the customer's generic
object.

Sorry for being a pain, thanks a lot for your help.

Jack Chan.

You should not be copying and pasting. That menu option is only there
to mislead you. Use Cut & Paste to organize the map. If you need an
extra copy somewhere for a different view, use the Smartsets.

Hi List,

I have Netview 6.02 on solaris 2.6, upgraded from 5.1

When there is a router down, it shows white (normal). Under the IP Internet
map, the router and all the nodes hanging of it shows white (normal). So we
avoided a lot of node down pages.

BUT.....in my copy and pasted submaps, some IP Network and switches are not
white (either yellow or green).

In essence, one thing shows white on IP Internet map and yellow/green in
other submaps. It seems like the color is not propagating through to some
submaps.

Has anyone encountered this before? What should I do?

Thanks in advance,

Jack Chan
