It has always been the case that tar or pax can restore the databases,
after they have been tar'd. The question is one of space. If you have a
lot, then it does not matter which you use. But NetView uses the sparse
filesystem technique and tar does not recognize that. So a database you
tar up and then restore to the same machine will take up more space than it
did before the restore. If you are tight on space in /usr/OV/databases,
this can be a problem. Pax, on the other hand, "understands" sparse file
systems and the restored db will use no more space than it did before. The
choice is still yours. The Release Notes simply don't go into that side of
it. They also don't mention that you can use AIX's backup and restore
utilities from SMIT instead, but that doesn't mean they are wrong.

Discussion
Does the "hotbackup" process on Netview 7.1 create a tar file that can be
restored using "tar" or should it be restored using "pax" like previous
database backups?
The Release Notes say to use "tar" to restore the file, but I'm wondering
if that's not a typo.
