Philippe, sounds like the permissions of your map database directory may have gotten hosed by somebody. Do the command "ovwls default" (assuming your map name is "default"). The output should be "-rw-rw-rw- root system default". If you don't see that, do a "man ovwchmod" to see the list of commands to fix it.
