In the trap destination table there are two entries, each when highlighted,
then going to modify, are configured with the ipaddresses of my Netview
servers.

You work backwards from the source.
How can you tell whether your Cisco devices are sending traps?
I think there is a method but not being a Cisco guy I am not the one to
ask.
On the MLM there is a trap destination table, what does it say?

Yes,
I have an MLM (AIX 4.3) that forwards traps to Two (AIX
4.3)RS6000 IBM F50
servers. I want to monitor some non cisco devices on the network. I've
enabled traps for these however I havent seen any of the traps in my
trapd.log. Furthermore I enabled port traps for my Cisco Switch devices
and
havent seen any of their link up/link down traps in my trap.log. Where to
begin?

Nothing out of the ordinary. On UNIX (AIX, Solaris, Tru64) typically you
just start trapd and that is all there is to it. By definition external
traps are sent to port 162/udp. And by default, that is where trapd
listens. If you have some other piece of software which also wants to
listen for traps and can forward them (Optivity or MLM for example) then
you set the nvtrapd-trap port to in /etc/services to some other port, the
same port that the receiving agent is going to forward them to, and you get
them after the first agent has sent them along. But if trapd is the only
trap recipient, you use 162/udp and wait for the traps to roll in.
NT is different because Microsoft has its own trap service to receive
traps. By default trapd on NT uses that service. In NetView 5.1, the NT
trapd worked just like the UNIX one, but then no other application could
receive traps on the NT box. The MS service allows multiple recipients and
we had a requirement handed down by marketing to use it to allow other
applications to run on the NetView for NT box.
Are you having some kind of problem which prompts you to ask this question?

James,
What is required for a 6.02 Netview AIX 4.3 system to recieve
external traps?

NetView for NT 6.0.2 requires the MS SNMP Trap Service to be installed
and running or it cannot get external traps.
I would guess that yours is not. Check Services in the Control Panel
and see.

Hello,
I am having a problem with my NV for NT 6.02 implementation. Events
that are
generated by NV are appearing in the Event Browser but snmp traps that
are
sent from other devices never show up in the Event Browser.
On start up I get:
"11/14/01 14:38:18 [trapd] SnmpMgrGetTrap error: Unknown error" in the
nv.log
I have verified the traps are arriving at the NV server with a sniffer
but
they never seem to show up in the trace file.
my trapd.lrf looks like:
"trapd:/usr/OV/bin/trapd:
OVs_YES_START::-z ,-a5000,-m1000,-t
..\log\trapd.trace:OVs_WELL_BEHAVED:120:"
I suspect a problem w/ trapd and ODBC but I haven't been able to find
any
other error msgs. Trapd starts and runs.
Any suggestion where to look next?
Thanks,
-Wes
