I do the same thing but use snmpCollect with a mib expression.
Where the interface index numbers are all over the place, I use
a script to generate the updates to snmpCol.conf with the correct
instance number for each router.
The mibExpr.conf file that comes with Netview for NT has many
examples in it. That file was not shipped with Netview for Unix
until V7. It is portable, though.

Yes, the formula you mention is called a Mib Expression in NetView.
You can roll your own if you like in /usr/OV/conf/mibExpr.conf (no GUI).
The reason that I do not use NetView's "Data Collection and Thresholds"
is because you cannot specify a different interface instance for each
router.
You are restricted to all, list or expression.
My WAN-FR links are on various instances and I dont care about the others.
Therefore manually specifying and querying the WAN-FR interface on each
router is the way I do it.

I am doing exactly that.
I have aprox 350 branch sites with FR wan circuits that I collect
BW-Utilization and generate a custom snmptrap if it bursts above 125% of
CIR
for 2 consecutive 5 minute polling intervals.
I do not use NetView's snmp data collection because I do not want data on
all interfaces and the Interface instance numbers are all over the place.
I wrote a script that queries just the WAN link, based on the router and
the
specific Interface instance number. Then number crunch the delta of the
byte
counts and compare them to the last result which I keep in a flat file for
each router. I uses this file with gnuplot to graph BW-Utilization stats
for
7 days.
I manually maintain a file containing the router name and link instance
number.

We have both 56k and T1 sites at over 300 remote locations, connected via
point to point or frame relay with Nortel routers at the edge. Management
would like to have us setup an alert in Netview that would page us when the
bandwidth on the WAN side at these sites exceeds 80% over a given amount of
time... Let's say 10 minutes.
We are running Netview 6.x on Solaris 8.
Any ideas on how this might be accomplished?
