Terry -
I am afraid things are not as simple as you want them to be.
The answers are not blanket like this.
You must distinguish platforms, and then you must also distinguish
functions in order to answer the question. "Support" is too broad a
term.
NetView 7.1 has a new MIB loader and browser that will read and query SNMP
V2 MIBs. This is the new java stuff. It also has a new mib2trap option.
The old xnmloadmib2 and xnmbrowser2 (on UNIX), and the old loadmibv2 and
browserv2 on NT, are still there also but not on the menus any more. It
is deprecated, but still shipped for those who wish to use it. The same
is true for the old standalone versions of mib2trap. They are still there
but deprecated. They will probably be removed in the future. This is
true across all platforms.
The new Java MIB browser is only tool in NetView which will do SNMP V2
gets and sets. All other functions in NetView will use SNMP V1 format
only. The line commands snmpget, snmpset, and so on use SNMP V1 format as
well. This is the short answer to your question #2 -- only when you use
the new Java MIB browser to do them.
This new loader and browser are still not integrated with snmpCollect on
UNIX nor on NT. If you want to collect on V2 MIB variables, then you must
edit snmpCol.conf by hand to make that happen. No special support has
been added for SNMP V2 data types, such as Counter32 or Counter 64. You
can treat Counter32 variables as simple counters, but snmpCollect will not
be able to handle Counter64 variables.
MLM does not do anything special for SNMP V2 either. I believe it will
handle the collections a bit better, but I don't believe that it supports
Counter64 variables either. It also does all its gets and sets in SNMP V1
format only. And it has no support for receiving SNMP V2 traps. They
will be ignored. So if you include MLM in your question #1, the answer
is false.
NetView for NT cannot handle SNMP V2 traps either, because the MS Trap
Service does not support them, and they feed them to us.
Only trapd on UNIX can receive SNMP V2 traps. We have not provided a
utility to send them either. snmptrap on UNIX (and nvsnmptrap on NT) use
SNMP V1 format for their traps.
The answer to number three, in my opinion, is "yes". But you have to
replace the snmpd daemon on the box with another one. We have no way to
be configured to use an alternate while the original one is still there.
We use whatever is installed and talks to use when we send our queries .
Many people have reported success using other agents on Solaris and NT. I
believe Empire has one.

Subject: [nv-l] NetView 7.1 SNMP support questions
I believe I already know the answers to the following questions, but just
want to verify with the list........
1) NetView 7.1 (including MLM support) supports SNMP V2? (Yes)
2) Does Netview 7.1 support SNMP V2 for gets and sets? (yes)
3) Can you change NetView to use a different snmp deamon than the native
snmp deamon for the O/S? (No)
