Hi,

Netview 7.1 on Windows 2000 SP3.

I have set up an NVSNIFFER to run morning and afternoon to scan the entire
network to find all the Tivoli Endpoints (ports 9494 or 9495 in our shop).
The idea being is that I can then use this smartset to find out all the
devices who DO NOT have an active Tivoli Endpoint on them.

I am finding that the smartset generated does not have certain PCs in it
which do have an active Tivoli Endpoint. Investigation has shown that it
is NVSNIFFER that is causing the Endpoint to abend. Not getting a reply
obviously causes it to think that there is no Tivoli Endpoint active.

I have written a fairly simple java script (PINGPORT) that allows me to
start a session to any TCP port on any IP address and time it and when I
run this against the endpoint in question it does not abend. It just does
the three-way handshake and then ends.

I was wondering what method NVSNIFFER uses to test a port such that it
causes the endpoint to abend and whether there was something I could do to
change and stop it. Perhaps someone else has seen this problem and has
solved it. Perhaps there's something else I am missing. There doesn't
seem to be anything on the Tivoli Knowledge Base about it.

The Tivoli Endpoint in question is running on NT 2000 and is at level 98
but there are plenty of other PCs out there at this same level that do not
abend.

Regards,
Alan.
