Your free MLM can do things that snmpCollect cannot. For instance you
can collect (and threshold on) things like n.n.n.n.n.n.n.n.n.*
The threshold events sent are different from the threshold events
sent by snmpCollect and you can see their definition under a separate
enterprise in the event configuration dialog. You can get quite fancy
with combined mib variables as well, but it is trickier to do. Read
more about it in the MLM manual in the online books. Note that
the MLM can be right on the Netview server.

To the best of my knowledge, the mib data collector doesn't have the
ability to do a total like you describe among all instances in an snmp
table.
I'm afraid the only answer I know of involves writing a simple shell
or Perl script that calls snmpwalk, pulls off the numbers, adds em up,
and calls postemsg or whatever alerting you want, and sticking it in
cron.
