Currenty in etc/hosts as follows:
IP ADDRESS           hostname   hostname.domain.name

I can ping both short and long names and Ip address

with name resolution on, type in --> hostname

verify that hostname is in your /etc/hosts with the correct IP address.
If fully qualified, then it must be in /etc/hosts fully qualified.

after renameing resolv.conf, can you "ping <hostname>".   can you "snmpwalk
<hostname> sysName"  ?
