Hello,

I have a node with the selection name of 10.13.0.85544; it seems that an object id is appended to the ipaddress. I have a similar situation with a different node.  When I do a display object info it has on the IP Hostname the correct name of the device but the field for selection name is the ipaddress + objid. BUT, the icon on the IP Internet map is the hostname (not the selection name)

SELECTION NAME --> 10.13.0.812345
SYMBOL/ICON NAME -->node1
IP HOSTNAME--> node1.tlc.state.tx.us
IP NAME--> node1.tlc.state.tx.us
SNMP IP address --> 10.13.0.8
Has anyone else seen this? I havent tried to delete and rediscover..

Alan,
You give us your forward DNS entried but not the reverse DNS.  My bet
would be that your reverse DNS files have 172.22.97.69 resolving back to
ciml34001 ??  I would check that with nslookup from your NetView system.

Remember NetView generally starts with IP addresses, not names.  You
have emphasised this by putting 172.22.97.69 in your seedfile.  The
first thing NetView will try and do is ping that address.  If it works,
it will try and resolve the address to a name via DNS.  If it gets a
name, that will be used as the Selection Name key field in the NetView
object database.

Can you actually ping that loopback address?  I'm not sure precisely how
the algorithm works, but if NetView can't ping the loopback it may end
up pinging interfaces it CAN reach and then the DNS step will kick in on
the first interface that got a successful ping response - which looks
like it might be your ethernet interface.

Cheers,
Jane
