Hi Scott,

The answer is maybe and yes. NetView uses the MLM for discovery only in
the subnet that he is in. If he is in several...I am not sure what the MLM
and NetView will do. I would guess that MLM can do that...but I would
need other people like support to confirm it.

The other item, MLM discovery does not save you much from a traffic or
NetView workload. When NetView is going through the discovery, he is
reading arp tables (picking up HINTS) and pinging ip addresses that he
finds, if they ping, then he walks the mibs and loads the info into the
NetView database. When he discovers a MLM in a subnet then NetView stops
processing the arp caches from that subnet. Instead NetView asks the MLM
for HINTS for that subnet and then NetView tries to ping those interfaces,
those he can ping he then walks the MIB and loads the info into the NetView
database. My understanding is that you only save the ARP cache reading by
the NetView server, all the pings / SNMP walks are otherwise the same.

When you distribute polling to a MLM, it creates a SmartSet that has all
the interfaces it is going to poll. To add other devices from other
subnets, simply use the SmartSet editor to add interfaces into that
SmartSet. Netmon will then distribute the polling for those to the MLM
too.

If you are doing management via SNMP traps, that is where you can get more
benefit by using filters in your MLMs to filter unsolicted traps before
they get to NetView. Also you can use the MLM to collect SNMP data and
do some better calculations before gathering that into SNMPCollect
databases.

Kind regards,

NetView 7.1.3 AIX 4.3.3

I am considering deploying several NT MLM's throughout our environment and
I
have a question. If I am reading this correctly, the MLM will discover and
poll the subnet it sits on only. My question is, if the MLM node has
several
interfaces in different subnets, can it discover and poll those subnets as
well?
