Thanks for the laugh. I'm picturing Netview having fun.

What is going on has to do with interface types, and which node is
discovered first for a subnet. Netview tries to separate interfaces of
different types into different segments within the subnet. This is
controlled by the if_to_sym file. For instance, there is a segment symbol
for Tokenring, and one for fddi, and one for ethernet. The one for 'Other'
looks just like the one for ethernet. When the first node for a subnet is
discovered, the segment type is created that matches that interface type.
Later, if a different kind of interface, or an 'Other' type is added to the
subnet, then a second segment will be added for nodes with interfaces of
that type. Look at the Object Info for an interface object to see what type
Netview thinks it is.

If the first node discovered is 'Other', then everything will usually be
added to the same segment. But some very specific types, like ATM, will
always be added to their own segment.

When you manually add a low-level node (not a router) to a map using the
GUI, you must drill into the segment and add it there. That ensures that it
is placed in the correct segment. Apparently when you use the loadhost
command, it adds it to the first segment it finds. If that is not the
correct segment, Netview tries to correct the problem by moving it. It
looks like your ATM switch was the first thing discovered on the subnet, so
segment1 was for ATM-only. You corrected the problem by deleting the ATM
device and segment, making the tokenring segment the first inline for
loadhosts. Rediscovering the ATM device (via SNMP) caused Netview to create
a specific segment for it.

Interface type is pulled from the MIB II Inteface table, ifType, and
compared to the file /usr/OV/conf/C/if_to_sym.

Cordially,

Hallo

from dudi3434 (is karl buchner):

I find out, that under the 10.1 net resides 2 Segments (Segment1 and
Segment 2)
Under Segment2 are any Hubs, under Segment1 a ATM-Switch.
I deleted the ATM-Switch and Segment1. Then I loaded the ATM-Switch with a
dummy snmp
community. It resides now under Segment 2.
Now when i load the pc-nepp, it resides now under Segment 2 and it remains
constant.
If I enable the community for the ATM-Switch, there's a Segment3 creating
and the switch
lan interface is deleted (in 10.1 net is now Segment2, Segment3 and the
symbol for the ATM-Switch)
A demand poll of pc-nepp let's it stay in Segment2, no delete of pc-nepp.

...I don't see the fun of it...

anyone to make a statement ??

Ciao

Karl

Hi to all

My system: NV 7.1.2 on Solaris 2.8

After loading a host with 'loadhosts', NV deletes it, but only in the
10.1.x.x net.
In 10.2.x.x net it works. (deleting is immediate, within 1 minute)
Tried loading a PC and a Printer Server.
