If you had installed a 7.1.2 backup directory on your test server and then
done a migration install of 7.1.3, your trapd.conf would have been migrated
and any new additions merged in. (You can still do that if you want -- if
you don't understand how, just post to the list again). As it is you can
just rename the default trapd.conf on your test box and ftp the trapd.conf
from your old box. It will run fine. If, and when, you want to migrate
to the new TEC_ITS_BASE configuration, there is an upgrade script in
/usr/OV/bin. All that is explained in the 7.1.3 Release Notes.
Editing trapd.conf can be done but it is risky. If you mess it up, trapd
won't start, but he will tell you exactly what line you messed up. And if
you do it while trapd is up, and then issue "event -e FMTCHG" (which causes
the format changed event to flow to trapd), he will re-read the file while
he is still using the old one that he loaded in memory. If an error is
found in the new one, the error message you would see giving the line
number in error will be sent as a trap you can see it in trapd.log. Trapd
will stay running using the old in-memory copy of the last good trapd.conf.
You can then take your time and fix the error in the file and try again.

Hi..
Please bear with me for a while.. I'm new to the whole concept of NMS, due
to recent career change.
We have a test server running 7.1.3, and in prod running 7.1.2 on AIX
4.3.3.
I have been testing several devices an making lots of additions to
Trapd.conf.
Can I cut and paste the traps from one file to another, or does all the
traps need to be re-entered ?
Also, we are ordering new Unix servers, that are coming with AIX 5.1L
pre-installed, is there any problem with 7.1.2 or 7.1.3 on this OS ?
Thanks
-John
