The question assumes too much. All NetView code uses the standard OS function gethostbyname to determine the IP address. It is up the OS to determine what name resolution scheme you are using and to return the proper IP address to NetView. So if you have set up your name resolution to use DNS, then that's what will be used. If you have set it up to use /etc/hosts first and then DNS, then that is what will be used. NetView doesn't know and doesn't care how you have done it. He just asks the operating system to resolve the name and return the answer in the standard structure. How you configure name resolution is OS-dependent. So you'll need to tell the list what platform you are using, and how you want name resolution to work, then perhaps someone can tell you how to set that up on your particular box. :-) James Shanks Level 3 Support for Tivoli NetView for UNIX and Windows Tivoli Software / IBM Software Group
Does snmpwalk use NSlookup to determine the name of the device it's <target> is. Or does it attempt to use the /etc/hosts file first? |
