hi!

this definitely sounds like a color problem !

since ubuntu is debian you need to check
if you are either running xfree86 or xorg.

you should check /var/log/XFree86.0.log or Xorg.0.log
for the resolution/color combination of your X11.

the config files to check are: /etc/X11/XF86Config or xorg.conf
try looking for "DefaultDepth" and "Depth", which should be
24 or 32 for a optimal netview-experience.

WARNING: changing those values without testing may prohibit
your X11 from starting up, rtfm or ask your local guru.
