I know a few things that can cause this one.  The most unhappy scenario 
is that you have filled up your NetView filesystem and now have a 
corrupted NetView database.  I have also seen it on Solaris if you don't 
have the LC_CTYPE environment variable set to en_US.
Try searching the nv-l archives with a search for "mapdb" -
